Fearne Cotton has revealed her first date with husband Jesse Wood consisted of a meal of vodka and cigarettes.

The former Top of the Pops host married musician Jesse, the son of Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood, in 2014, and their first date was as rock and roll as you’d expect.

Fearne appeared on the latest episode of the Table Manners podcast with Jessie Ware, and was asked if she remembered the meal she had on her first date with Jesse.

The 39-year-old joked: ‘We definitely didn’t eat. My husband is the loveliest man ever, he’s so amazing. For our first date, I was a bit nervous because this was a point in my late 20s where for some reason there was interest in who I was dating, and it was really horrible.’

In an effort to hide the budding relationship from the cameras, Jesse, now 44, came to Fearne’s house, armed with a plastic bag of booze.

She explained: ‘My husband is now, and he’ll talk about this publicly, has been sober now for eight years, but he wasn’t when we met. So he turned up at my house with a plastic bag with a bottle of vodka in, and we drank that and we did not eat a thing.

‘I think I had probably a couple of cigarettes just to wash down the vodka and that was me done. That was my meal that night.’

While Jesse no longer drinks, Fearne will have a cocktail or a gin and tonic when out at restaurants, but lamented the loss of her alcohol tolerance.

She said: ‘I’m such a lightweight now that if I have even one, I’m so drunk. Honestly, I used to be the most amazing drinker.

‘That night for instance, Jesse and his plastic bag of vodka, I could have drank all night, vodka, mix it with some red wine, I wouldn’t even get drunk, I’d be absolutely fine.’

Fearne and Jesse’s date nights are now a lot different, as the pair have not only ditched vodka, but have been vegan for over a year – but even then, date nights are hard to come by.

The former Celebrity Juice panellist admitted that she has found home-schooling during lockdown ‘impossible’, as she and Jesse attempt to keep Lola, 15, Rex, eight, and Honey, five, occupied (Jesse is also dad to Arthur, 19, from his marriage to Tilly Wood, with whom he also shares Lola).

Fearne told Jessie and her mum Lennie: ‘It’s so hard. One of them is at uni, and then Lola who is 15, she’s just doing her own thing. And then Rex is wild… wild, he’s the eight-year-old. It’s impossible. And then Honey, who’s five, quite easy. So it’s mainly Rex.

‘It’s impossible, it’s unrealistic. It’s really unrealistic to be doing [homeschooling] and to be trying to work and I’m a bit of a neat freak so if everything is really chaotic in the house I really freak out so I’m trying to keep everything looking nice – pointless. Trying to guide them in life and actually work, and it’s just so unrealistic, it’s bonkers.’

As well as parenting, Fearne has been working on books based on her podcast Happy Place, while series nine of the successful podcast launched this week.
