The Bachelor’s Matt James was left in tears after Serena Pitt chose to walk away from the dating competition after hometown dates last night.
Serena, Rachael Kirkconnell, Bri Springs and Michelle Young each got to have a hometown date with Matt as their families flew into the luxurious Nemacolin resort where the show was filmed.
However, having her family around seemed to help Serena realize that things weren’t quite right in her progressing relationship with Matt.
Speaking to him afterwards, she explained: ‘I thought that it was fear initially, that I was just scared. But I think if I’m being honest with myself, it’s more than that. I think it just comes down to the fact that I don’t think you’re my person.’
Matt was visibly shocked and struggled to find words to respond to her admission as he eventually said: ‘It sucks to hear that. But I felt it after I left that conversation with your family, that there was something off with you. It just stinks.’
‘I’m just not there. And I don’t know why,’ Serena glumly replied.
The pair said their goodbyes as she led Matt to a waiting limo. In a confessional recorded afterwards, Matt eyes filled with tears.
He stated: ‘That’s not how I saw our journey ending. That was tough.
‘The easy thing to do when talking to Serena was run, and that’s what I wanted to do, ’cause that’s what I’ve seen my whole life, is just to run from difficult conversations. But nothing gets resolved.’
Matt started thinking about the show’s other contestants and shared his concern their feelings might change like Serena and previous contestant Kit Keenan, leaving him with a broken heart.
At the rose ceremony, he reiterated that each of them needed to think ‘long and hard’ about the commitment they could be making to him when they accepted the rose.
Rachael, 24, Michelle, 27, and 24-year-old Bri Springs officially progressed on to the final.
The Bachelor airs Monday on ABC.
