Several Love Island stars have been found to be using the Government’s furlough scheme to keep their businesses afloat during the coronavirus pandemic.

Under the furlough scheme, the Government will continue to pay 80% of wages, up to £2,500 a month, allowing employees to continue receiving an income. It’s up to individuals businesses to decide whether they want to pay the extra 20% of an employee’s salary to make up the full amount.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to extend the furlough scheme and business rate relief into the summer in next month’s Budget.

According to The Sun, Alex and Olivia Bowen – who finished runners-up in the 2016 series of Love Island – appear on an official Government list of claimants with their business OAB Fashion Ltd.

The couple are among the highest-earners to emerge from Love Island and are reportedly worth a combined £4.4 million.

In a statement, their spokesman said: ‘Alex and Olivia followed the advice of the government to put one member of staff who would otherwise have been let go from the company because of a reduction of workload due to the pandemic onto the furlough scheme so they were not without an income.

‘Their fashion business is a young company and all actions taken were in line with government instructions to protect their staff and keep afloat during these uncertain times.’

Olivia recently revealed that she has earnt as much as £50,000 in one month, but admitted the figure made her ‘feel a bit sick saying it out loud’.

Gabby Allen, who appeared on the 2017 series of the ITV2 dating series, has reportedly registered her company, GDA Enterprises Ltd, with the furlough scheme under the category of ‘amusement and recreation activities’.

The fitness trainer is said to be worth an estimated £1.3 million.

Kem Cetinay, who won Gabby’s series alongside ex-girlfriend Amber Davies, is reportedly claiming furlough allowance for his business Kemcet Ltd.

He’s believed to have earned £1.5 million in the three years since appearing on the programme.

Celebrities have been criticised for using the furlough scheme when many boast multi-million personal fortunes.

Victoria Beckham notably came under fire earlier on the pandemic for using the furlough scheme for her fashion brand despite being worth around £360 million alongside husband David Beckham.

However, the former Spice Girls singer later did a U-turn and decided not to use the Government’s assistance, instead choosing to ‘navigate’ through the crisis without it.
