The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have revealed that they will not return as working members of the royal family. Following a discussion with the Queen, the couple will be stripped of their titles and patronages, confirming rumours earlier this week.
A statement from Buckingham Palace said that Meghan and Harry remain “much loved members of the royal family”. The Sussexes first announced plans to step down from their royal duties in January 2020 after the duchess was subjected to racist and sexist attacks from the British press.
“The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service,” the statement from Buckingham Palace said. “While all are saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.”
A spokesman for Harry and Meghan said: “As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role. We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.”
Since their initial announcement earlier last year, Meghan and Harry relocated to LA with their son, Archie. The couple recently revealed that they are expecting their second child in the next few months, sharing a candid, touching image of the two in celebration of the news.
Their decision to move away from the royal family has afforded them more freedom to discuss issues that they care about, from the importance of voting to the damaging effects of social media. In September, the duchess made a surprise appearance on America’s Got Talent, voicing her support for a contestant called Archie Williams, who spent 36 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit until his release last year.
The two are soon to appear on a televised interview with Oprah to discuss their move to the US and their plans going forward.
