Sex and The City will look very different when it returns for its eagerly-anticipated limited series – and we’re not just talking about the absence of Samantha Jones.

It has been reported that as well as Kim Cattrall choosing not to return for the reboot, there will be no Mr Big in the mix either.

Page Six has claimed that Chris Noth will not be returning to the cast as Carrie Bradshaw’s husband John James Preston, more commonly known as Big, for the upcoming Sex and The City reboot, And Just Like That…

The publication also reported that David Eigenberg, who plays Miranda Hobbes’ husband Steve, has not signed on to the project, although a rep said that he was in negotiations to appear.

Big appeared in all six seasons of Sex and The City as Carrie’s on again, off again boyfriend, with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) leaving Aleksandr Petrovsky for him in Paris in the series finale.

The 2008 movie followed Big proposing, jilting Carrie at the altar, and eventually marrying her at a register office, and the much-panned sequel saw him give Carrie a late engagement ring after she… kissed her ex Aidan in Abu Dhabi? Yeah, we have no clue what the point of that was at all.

But in the light of this news about Noth – who was recently seen in the Doctor Who Christmas special – it seems that the reboot could be taking elements of the scrapped script for a third movie.

Back in 2017, it was confirmed that Sex and the City 3 had been axed just weeks before filming commenced, and the following year, details from the script emerged, revealing that Big would have been killed off ‘relatively early’ in the movie.

In a Sex and The City deep dive for the Origins podcast, James Miller said: ‘People close to Kim [Cattrall] believe that the script didn’t have a lot to offer the character of Samantha.

‘They point to the fact that it calls for Mr. Big to die of a heart attack in the shower, relatively early on in the film, making the remainder of the movie more about how Carrie recovers from Big’s death than about the relationship between the four women.’

At the time, Noth seemed fine with being bumped off, seeing as he hated the ‘corny’ endings to the previous two movies.

He said: ‘I really hate corny stuff and it could be because I’m a little bit of a cynic. Like, the whole thing at the end of the movie in the shoe closet — hated it. Hated the thing at the end of the movie after I felt she deceived me and then I say, “Well, it’s time I give you a bigger diamond ring.”

‘Hated it. I just hate the cornball s*** and I thought it was just really sentimental and overly romantic without any feet in realism.’

So maybe it’s not such a surprise he’s not returning for the limited series.

While Noth is out and Eigenberg is up in the air, it’s unclear if Evan Handler will return as Charlotte York’s husband Harry for the show, or if the three women will be single again.

After public swipes at her co-stars, particularly Sarah Jessica Parker, it was no shock that Kim Cattrall opted out of the series, after playing sex positive queen Samantha on the show.

While it’s not been confirmed how Samantha’s exit will be dealt with, HBO Max’s chief content officer Casey Bloys gave hints that it will feel natural.

He told TV Line: ‘They’re not trying to re-do Sex and the City. They’re not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s. It is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s.

‘Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life…

‘They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.’
