No one is doubting Jim Ross’ legacy at the commentary desk – but the AEW Dynamite broadcaster had a howler last night.
The legendary broadcaster slipped up during Wednesday night’s programme as he referred to Kenny Omega – the man currently holding the AEW World Title – as the WWE Champion.
Given JR’s long history with the rival promotion, you can maybe excuse the slight slip-up, but not surprisingly the internet didn’t take too kindly to the slip-up.
Eventually, rumblings of the embarrassing mishap reached Drew McIntyre – who, for those playing at home, is the actual WWE Champion – and he responded with his typically dry sense of humour.
Drew – set to defend that title against AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy, Sheamus, Kofi Kingston and Randy Orton at Elimination Chamber on Sunday, February 21 – shared a snap of himself wearing the kind of expression most fans will have had hearing the mistake.
Although he didn’t reference AEW directly, the photo was tellingly captioned: ‘The WWE World Champion, Drew McIntyre, is not impressed or amused.’
JR has since addressed and owned up to his error, which he put down to the pressures of live television.
He simply tweeted: ‘Yep. Heat of battle. Live TV. My bad…,. (sic)’
After the show, Tony Schiavone was asked about his co-star’s error and said: ‘Why did he call him that?
‘Because he made a mistake. And you have to keep moving forward when you make a mistake. I hope you get that. If you don’t, that’s why.’
Elsewhere on a stacked episode, fans saw Sting get powerbombed by Brian Cage, which is the most physically involved he’s been in a ring since his career was effectively ended following his match against Seth Rollins at Night of Champions 2015.
And in other news, Omega is set for a showdown against Jon Moxley as he defends the AEW World Championship – not the WWE belt – in an Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch.
While fans are no doubt excited by the announcement, Mox’s wife Renee Paquette – formerly Renee Young in WWE – was less amused.
In a series of tweets, she wrote: ‘Exploding. Barbed wire. Death match… Why you putting me through this!? If my water breaks… that’s on you guys.’
