Hugh Dennis has revealed that 800-year-old remains were discovered in someone’s garden on his new series The Great British Dig: History In Your Back Garden.

The new More4 programme sees the Outnumbered actor join leading archaeologists to excavate gardens to search for artifacts and discover more about the local area.

For one episode, the team headed to north Yorkshire to look for medieval graves in Masham.

With the help of archaeologists Richard Taylor, Natasha Billson and Dr Chloe Duckworth, Hugh and the team made the shocking discovery after digging in back gardens of houses and pubs.

Speaking on Steph’s Packed Lunch, Hugh said: ‘We uncovered 800 year old bodies. They were literally in people’s back gardens.

‘There was one that was wedged between someone’s garage and the wall next door. There was another one five yards away underneath the cash point,’ he told Steph McGovern.

‘You suspect there might be something down there, but you’re not expecting to find that,’ he added.

The actor also spoke about the appearance of the skeletons they discovered, joking that they reminded him of famous actors.

‘There’s one I think that looked a bit like Dave Morrissey and another that looked like Hugh Bonneville,’ he said.

The comedian added: ‘Joking apart, we had a facial reconstruction person who rebuilt the face of this skeleton that we had found.

‘As soon as you see that, it makes you think: “This is a proper person with a proper life”. He looked like someone you’d go to the pub with.’

The first episode of the series is due to air this evening, bringing the discovery of a Roman stronghold to our screens.

The Great British Dig: History In Your Back Garden’ begins tonight on More4 at 9pm
