Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Charisma Carpenter has apologised to Eliza Dushku for not ‘lending her voice’ when the actress spoke out about her experience of sexual misconduct in the workplace.

Charisma, who played Cordelia in the main series and spin-off Angel, has been inundated with support from her former castmates after speaking out against director Joss Whedon, citing a series of unacceptable behaviours on set and constant threats on her job.

Among the supporters was Eliza, who played Faith, who has previously spoken about her own experiences of workplace misconduct while working in the industry.

While Dushku’s allegations were not connected to Whedon, Charisma now wishes she stood up for her friend when she needed it, and apologised publicly for not doing so.

Underneath Eliza’s statement on Instagram, Charisma wrote: ‘I owe you an apology. I never lent my voice to you privately nor publicly when you shared your truth after suffering sexual misconduct in the workplace.

‘As I wrote to you privately, this makes your statement of support sweeter. And as I said to J, your loving embrace empowers others to feel safe to share their stories.

‘Thank you for being who you are. Thank you for your inspiring words of support. I will never forget how you have made me feel.’

Charisma was eventually motivated to speak out about her treatment from Whedon after Justice League star Ray Fisher accused the director of ‘gross and abusive behaviour’ on set of the DC blockbuster.

Since then, other Buffy stars including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michelle Tratchenberg and James Marsters have given their own accounts, supporting her allegations.

In 2018, Eliza was offered a $9.5million (£7.5million) settlement by CBS to ‘prohibit her from discussing her experiences’ on the set of Bull.

She was written out of the legal series in 2017 after confronting co-star Michael Weatherly about his behaviour and comments towards her on set.

Weatherly’s character Dr. Jason Bull had a ‘running flirtation’ with Eliza’s character J.P. Nunnelly in the show, and ‘intimacy’ was expected to follow in season five, but the actress never made it that far.

Her settlement was confirmed in a statement from CBS, which read: ‘The allegations in Ms. Dushku’s claims are an example that, while we remain committed to a culture defined by a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace, our work is far from done.

‘The settlement of these claims reflects the projected amount that Ms. Dushku would have received for the balance of her contract as a series regular, and was determined in a mutually agreed upon mediation process at the time.’

‘When Eliza told me that she wasn’t comfortable with my language and attempt at humour, I was mortified to have offended her and immediately apologised,’ Weatherly later said in his own statement.

The actor went on to say that his conduct was ‘both not funny and not appropriate’ and he expressed regret for the ‘pain’ it had caused her.
