Carol Vorderman’s daughter may just land the coolest job ever, after applying to become an astronaut.

Carol, 60, revealed that her daughter, Katie, 30, is hoping to join the European Space Agency and has sent off an application, after the ESA advertised it was looking for astronauts for the first time in 11 years.

The former Countdown star was seen re-sharing a tweet the ESA had posted calling out for wannabe-astronauts to apply and revealed that Katie was ‘beyond excited’ to give it a go.

Carol tweeted: ‘My girl is to infinity and beyond excited about this….. she’s applying …. xx go Katie … (sic)’

Fans made sure to send Katie – who is currently a research scientist – messages of good luck after spotting Carol’s tweet.

Katie also teaches maths alongside mum Carol for her online programme The Maths Factor, and the pair are self-confessed ‘space geeks’.

They had made their joint TV presenting debut for The One Show in 2018, where they travelled to Texas to visit the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, and the labs at NASA.

At the time, Katie had been at Cambridge University finishing her PHD in nanotechnology – where she had been researching a hydrophobic cancer drug – and she revealed her hopes of finally becoming an astronaut one day.

Previously speaking about her daughter, Carol described Katie as a ‘total academic’ and joked ‘the apple fell up the tree rather than from it’ when it comes to her mini-me.

‘I am very proud of her,’ Carol said, adding: ‘If I am a version 1, Katie is a version 10.7!’

She shares Katie with ex-husband Patrick King. The former couple are also parents to son Cameron, 24.

Carol, meanwhile, has been busy pursuing her own dreams, after qualifying for a private pilot’s license in 2014 and becoming an ambassador to the Royal Air Force Air Cadets the same year.

Fans will remember that Carol made her first solo flight live on This Morning in 2013 and first announced her plans to fly around the world single-handedly – following the intended flight path of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.

It was the first time Carol had piloted a plane by herself and she later planned to carry out her round the world trip in 2017, but it was postponed following the death of her mum Jean.

Carol has still been flying, however, and was recently seen hanging out at the back of fighter jets mid air to film an exciting new project.

In April last year, the presenter donated her beloved plane called Mildred to aid the NHS when the coronavirus pandemic first hit, It was used to deliver PPE (personal protective equipment).

Carol tweeted: ;My Mildred and I (my aeroplane N242CV) have had some adventures BUT I want to tell you that right now she is being used by the amazing people at @BAESystemsAir to ferry PPE to where it’s needed by our #NHS around the country…. #GoMildred #NHSThankYou.’
