The trailer for Zendaya and John David Washington’s upcoming Netflix movie Malcolm & Marie has been released, and it’s like poetry.
Malcolm awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success and the films start on that high before the evening suddenly takes a turn.
Revelations about their relationship (and past relationships) begin to surface and the pair air out their grievances.
The conversation that plays out in the film tests the strength of their love as the trailer warns ‘This is not a love story, it is a story about love.’
According to Netflix, the film is ‘an ode to the great Hollywood romances as well as a heartfelt expression of faith in the medium’s future.’
If you couldn’t already tell that this is going to get deep, then the fact the film was shot in black and white totally adds to the moodiness.
Euphoria director Sam Levinson teamed up with the stars to film the flick in quarantine, with cinematographer Marcell Rev also helping bring the project to life.
The gang shot the movie in Carmel, California from 17 June to 2 July. Yep, all done in just 15 days.
The film actually came about after Zendaya asked her Euphoria boss if he could write and direct a movie during quarantine.
Writing it took six days, with the finished product featuring social themes relevant to life post-coronavirus and echoes of Netflix’s Marriage Story.
Then Levinson, his production partner, and wife Ashley, producer Kevin Turen, Zendaya, and Washington all agreed to fund the film. A true passion project if we’ve ever seen one.
Malcolm & Marie is available to stream on Netflix from February 5.
