Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway has been opening up about her husband Derek Draper’s condition as he fights coronavirus complications in hospital.

Derek, 53, was taken to intensive care in March last year after contracting coronavirus and has remained there since.

His is thought to be the one of the longest coronavirus battles in the UK.

Kate, 53, has been continuing with her presenting duties on Good Morning Britain, alongside her co-star Piers Morgan, and looking after the two children she and Derek share, Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11.

This week, Kate said she’d had a ‘tough’ Christmas, but that she was able to see him over Christmas.

She explained on Good Morning Britain: ‘Of course, it was very heightened with emotion because he’s very changed…

‘It was one of those moments where it was so wonderful but then also it sort of amplified how sad everything was, and how different it is.’

In October last year, Kate revealed that there had been an ‘amazing but heartbreaking breakthrough’, as Derek said his first word since being hospitalised, as she saw him whisper the word ‘pain’.

She said to The Sun at the time: ‘It’s a case of trying to balance belief, hope, optimism with reality.

‘But we have had a breakthrough which was both amazing yet heartbreaking.’

Derek previously worked as a lobbyist and set up a New Labour organisation. He also worked as the Political Editor of the Modern Review, was briefly a columnist for the Daily Express, and a presenter on Talk Radio UK.

He was a political aide to former Labour cabinet minister Peter Mandelson, and has written two books – Blair’s 100 Days and Life Support.

After leaving politics, Derek retrained as a psychotherapist.

Derek and Kate married in 2005, in Camden, London. They later welcomed their two children, Darcey and Billy.

Has Kate been able to see Derek?

It’s been hard for Kate, Darcey and Billy to see Derek in person, due to the ongoing pandemic, although they were able to see him over Christmas.

Over the past few months, she’s been able to FaceTime her husband, and she has been able to visit in person a few times.

However, due to the third lockdown in England, the presenter is no longer allowed to visit Derek.

She said on Good Morning Britain: ‘Now I’m in a position where even I can’t visit. We’re into lockdown, no visits at all, which I hope doesn’t continue for the whole of lockdown because I think that will be very impactful.’

Although Kate’s visits to see Derek were ‘infrequent’, she stressed ‘the ability was very carefully controlled situations where you could get some sort of access.’

‘Now, I don’t know whether it’s every hospital, but certainly where Derek is being treated there are now no visitors at all, which is tough,’ she added.
