Kate Garraway has revealed she’s no longer allowed to visit her husband Derek Draper in hospital thanks to the new coronavirus restrictions.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a third nationwide lockdown on Monday and, as a result, the hospital where the Good Morning Britain presenter’s partner is receiving treatment for coronavirus has banned loved ones from entering the premises.
Speaking to co-host Ben Shephard and Dr Hilary Jones about the changes, Kate said: ‘Now I’m in a position where even I can’t visit.
‘We’re into lockdown, no visits at all, which I hope doesn’t continue for the whole of lockdown because I think that will be very impactful.’
Although Kate’s visits to see Derek were ‘infrequent’, she stressed ‘the ability was very carefully controlled situations where you could get some sort of access.’
‘Now, I don’t know whether it’s every hospital, but certainly where Derek is being treated there are now no visitors at all, which is tough,’ she added.
Derek, 53, is one of the longest Covid-19 patients in intensive care, having been admitted to hospital with the virus in March.
Although Kate is unable to see Derek for the time being, she did share that her two children, Darcey and William, were able to see their dad over the Christmas period.
‘There was a lovely moment which we did have which was we did over the period get to see Derek and the children did, which was the first time they’ve been able to do that,’ she revealed.
‘So that was amazing. Of course, it was very heightened with emotion because he is very changed… I’m very grateful to have had that opportunity.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
