The Eternals director Chloe Zhao has confirmed that she’s also penned the script for the upcoming Marvel flick.
The filmmaker said she’s been able to create a sense of ‘scale and intimacy’ on the movie, as she thanked Marvel bosses for ‘holding her hand’ throughout the process.
‘I am the writer on The Eternals, the credits just aren’t updated yet,’ she clarified. ‘I don’t know what it would be like if I didn’t write the film that I … if I wasn’t a huge part of the writing process. I haven’t experienced that in my career, I’m scared of that if that happens one day.’
The 38-year-old added to journalist Margaret Gardiner: ‘I think what Marvel has been so incredible at – Kevin [Feige] and Nate [Moore] and the whole team – they knew from the moment I pitched the film that I really wanted the scope and scale at the same time as the intimacy, they knew I wanted both.
‘They have been so incredible holding my hand through the entire process of allowing me to go as far as possible and as small as possible, and how that fit into the MCU. It’s been a pretty incredible process.’
Directed by Nomadland filmmaker Chloe, The Eternals is set to star Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington, Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, and Salma Hayek.
While it was originally set for release in November 2020, it was pushed back a year due to delays over the coronavirus pandemic.
Kumail supported the decision, writing on Twitter: ‘Marvel made the right & responsible decision. There’s a pandemic.
‘Nothing is more important than health & lives. I can’t tell ppl to go to a movie theatre until I feel safe going to one.’
He added: ‘Take care of yourselves. I promise it’ll be worth the wait!’
Details about the movie have been kept under wraps, although Marvel boss Kevin previously confirmed that it will feature a prominent LGBT character.
He also teased that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be getting its first transgender character and hinted that they will be featured in The Eternals.
When asked at the New York Film Academy whether there were any plans to introduce more diverse characters, specifically transgender characters, the 46-year-old producer said: ‘Yes, absolutely yes.
‘Very soon, in a movie, we’re shooting right now, yes.’
Kevin never specified which movie the character will appear in but, at the time, The Eternals was the only project in the middle of filming.
The Eternals is set for release on November 5, 2021.
