Beat The Chasers star Mark Labbett may be a fountain of knowledge but apparently he has no idea how to pronounce the state of Arkansas.

The ITV game show, a spin-off of the daytime programme, returned with series two on Sunday night with the chasers – Mark aka The Beast, Anne Hegerty (The Governess), Paul Sinha (The Sinnerman), Jenny Ryan (The Vixen) and Shaun Wallace (The Dark Destroyer) – back in the hot seats.

Viewers were left flabbergasted when The Beast was asked which state the capital of Little Rock was during a head-to-head with contestant Rahim and, well, his pronunciation might have a lot to do with it.

When intending to reply Arkansas as the answer, The Beast actually said something to the effect of ‘Are-Kansas’ and it didn’t go unnoticed.

‘The beast says “Arkansas” all wrong,’ one Twitter user alerted their followers.

Another wondered: ‘Did… did @MarkLabbett just pronounce Arkansas like it’s spelt???????’

‘One of the chasers has just said Ar-Kansas instead of Arkansas and GOT IT RIGHT?! No. Absolutely not,’ another said.

Feeling sympathy for contestant Rahim who eventually lost out on £100,000, one viewer tweeted: ‘Can’t help but feel Rahim was cheated. Arkansas is not pronounced “R-Kansas” as the Beast said.’

Another viewer agreed: ‘Just re-watched on the Sky box & the Beast said ‘Ar-Kansas’ & not ‘Arkansaw’ (Arkansas) so surely that is the wrong answer & Raheem should have won the 100k unless they are giving leeway with pronunciation of the answers?’

Rahim was close to scooping £100,000 but lost out with just one second to spare, leaving viewers devastated on his behalf.

‘That just broke my heart … how can you be that close to £100,000,’ one viewer reacted.

‘OMG unbelievable Rahim could have won £100,000!! The Chasers only had one second left!! Proper guttered for him!’ one said.

Another stunned viewer tweeted: ‘Bloody hell! Watching #BeatTheChasers & nearly screamed the house down with Rahim missing out on £100,000!! Poor lad deserved to win!!’

Beat The Chasers is available to watch on ITV Hub.
