Des, the ITV drama about serial killer Dennis Nilsen, reached its tense climax with tonight’s nail-biting episode – and viewers are predicting awards for the cast.

The ep was…. a lot.

The final instalment of ITV’s hit three-part series saw Nilsen – played by Broadchurch and Doctor Who actor David Tennant – on trial at London’s Old Bailey court.

The trial saw Carl Stotter (Laurie Kynaston) and DCI Peter Jay (Daniel Mays) questioned, as a jury deliberated over whether Nilsen was guilty of murder or manslaughter.

In real life, he was convicted at the Old Bailey of six counts of murder and two of attempted murder on 4 November 1983, and sentenced to life in prison.

Reacting the the final scenes, one viewer said: ‘And all the BAFTA’s must go to #davidtennant @benjaminjames27 @DanielMays9 for @ITV#des what a brilliant drama.’

Another said: ‘So #Des is legitimately one of the best bits of TV I’ve watched this year David Tennant is some actor. It was actually avid viewing.’

While a fan enthused: ‘A superb watch. Great acting all round.’

A follower agreed: ‘David Tennant needs some sort of award for that. he was SO creepy you forgot who he really was for a while.’

A Twitter user opined: ‘Proof that drama doesn’t need to be flashy or action packed to make an impact.’

Known as the Muswell Hill murderer, Nilsen killed at least 12 men and boys between 1978 and 1983.

He died on May 12 2018 at the age of 72.
