The crown worn by Biggie Smalls in what is believed to be his last ever photoshoot has sold at auction for almost half a million pounds.
The rapper was pictured wearing the crown, which he signed, in 1997 with the photoshoot being taken three days before he was killed in Los Angeles, according to Sotheby’s.
The auction house sold the rare piece of memorabilia for $594,750 (£458,000) during a sale in New York on Wednesday.
Biggie – also known as The Notorious B.I.G. wore the crown tilted to one side during his King Of New York photoshoot with Rap Pages magazine.
The Juicy star, whose real name was Christopher Wallace, was just 24 years old when he was killed when he was shot while in his car on the way home from the Soul Train music awards.
As well as Biggie’s crown, this week’s auction at Sotheby’s also featured love letters from his rival, Tupac Shakur.
A total of 22 letters written by Tupac when he was 16, to his school friend Kathy Loy, sold for $75,600 (£59,000).
The letters, which totalled 42 pages, charted their two-month relationship, as well as a letter of regret sent around a year later.
Tupac was also killed at the age of 25 after being shot in his car following a fight in a casino in Las Vegas.
Cassandra Hatton, vice president and senior specialist in Sotheby’s books and manuscripts department, said: ‘We are thrilled with the results from tonight’s historic hip hop auction in New York, the birthplace of hip hop.
‘Throughout the sale, we saw strong bidding from across age brackets and countries, with significant interest from leading cultural institutions in the US.’
A portion of the profits from the sale were donated to Queens Public Library Foundation’s hip hop programmes in New York and Building Beats, a community organisation teaching young people through DJ and music courses.
